Paul Vaughan, who spent three years at Warrington Wolves, will retire from professional rugby league after the final game of the Super League season this week. The 35-year-old Australian prop joined York Knights for the 2026 season and will play his last match on Thursday against Bradford Bulls at the LNER Community Stadium.
Vaughan has been a significant contributor for York this term, making 25 appearances and scoring seven tries. The Knights are competing in their first season in Super League, currently sitting 10th in the league.
Professional career
The former dual Italy and Australia international made his National Rugby League debut in 2013 for Canberra Raiders. He went on to play for St George Illawarra and Canterbury Bulldogs before moving to England. Vaughan also represented New South Wales in State of Origin.
Vaughan's statement
"Rugby league has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember," Vaughan said. "What started as a childhood dream became a career and a journey I could never have imagined, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived it."
He thanked his family, team-mates, coaches and staff for their support over his career, and expressed gratitude to York Knights for the opportunity to finish his playing days with the club.
Coach's tribute
York Knights head coach Mark Applegarth praised Vaughan's impact on the squad. "I can't speak highly enough of Paul," Applegarth said. "He chose to join us, over a number of other offers, to challenge himself and he's certainly done that. He's a man that leads by actions and I've really enjoyed coaching him and getting to know him and his family."
